The Brewers survived a close one Sunday against the Merchants, winning 10-9 on Ryan Olson's walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning. The Brew Crew has a few more tune up games coming up in preparation for the Section Tournament the first weekend of August in Hibbing, MN with games Wednesday vs. Jamestown Elks at Matson Field, Thursday in Fergus Falls, and a double header against Brainerd on West Fargo's field on Sunday afternoon. It has been a successful season so far, despite disappointments in tournament play where the Brewers came up short in Austin and Jordan. Spencer Flaten and Blake Turbak have really added speed and power to this year's lineup with Turbak batting over .500 in just under 50 at bats and driving in 19 runs and Flaten with 9 stolen bases and showing power at the plate as well. Add that production to offensive juggernot Chris Clemenson (10 home runs) and Mike Peschel (who is having his best offensive season) and the team appears to be a strong threat to go deep this year. Pitching depth is very good this season with Jason Beilke and Victor Sokolofsky leading the way.
Max Rusch joined the team but was immediately called up to the Frontier League. Mike Peschel has continued the closer role but watch for him to potentially start games in the playoffs as needed. Newcomers Mike Rerick and Trent Egan have bolstered the depth while Lyter, Petry, and Oye have remained steady contributors.
The Brewers feel they have a lot in the tank and lot to prove after last year's 2 games and out State appearance. The playoffs begin Friday August 3rd in Hibbing, MN. The Brewers will need to win 2 games before losing 2 to advance to the Super Section tournament the weekend of August 17th-19th at either Elko, Red Wing, Chaska, or Shakopee. Good luck Brewers! Fan support is much appreciated at Matson Field where $2.50 beers are available from the concession stand.
