Brewers Earn Top Seed In Region With Sweep of Miners

The Brewers swept rival Moorhead Miners in convincing fashion on Sunday to capture the West Central League Championship.

And boy was it a hot & muggy afternoon for a double header at McCormick Field with temps in the mid 90's.  Battling the heat and humidity was tough not only for the players, but apparently for umpires as well.  Both games featured a plethora of controversial calls, one of which led to the ejection of a Miners ballplayer.

Redhawks Call Up Jeremy Peschel

The Brewers are without starting shortstop Jeremy Peschel for at least the immediate near future after Jeremy accepted a call from the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks.  The Redhawks are the defending champions of the Northern League and were looking to fill a need for a good utility infielder after losing a player to injury.  Jeremy was thrilled to accept the challenge and was immediately inserted into the lineup in Winnipeg over the weekend.  The Brew Crew wishes Jeremy the best of luck with the Redhawks!

Brewers Sweep Saints To Earn Regional Playoff Berth

The Brew Crew took two from the Moorhead Saints to open the 2007 West Central League Playoffs on Sunday at Teamster Field to conclude a long weekend of baseball, winning 4 out of 5 total games.  Saturday's action in Nimrod, MN started with a loss to the Bemidji Mudcats (3-6) but the Brewers bounced back in the 2nd game of the afternoon against the Lakes Area Lightning with a 6-1 win behind the arm of Gabe Shockman.  Gabe did not allow a hit through 6 innings, despite allowing 6 walks and Ryan Olson finished off the 7th inning to conclude the no hitter.

The Brewers camped out in the Nimrod area and returned to the field Sunday morning to put a whipping on the Staples Legionnaires, 8-0.

The weekend concluded with a double-header matchup with the Moorhead Saints back in Fargo.  In the opener the Brewers scored early and often to back starting pitcher Brook Lyter as they easily topped the Saints 14-0.  Kent Moser went 4 for 5 with a pile of rbi's.  In the nightcap Andy Leraas took the hill and shut down the Saints again, 3-0.

With the victories over the Saints the Brewers have now guaranteed a spot in the Regional playoffs.

Border Battle Tournament

The Jamestown Elks were winners of the the Brewers Border Battle Tournament held at John Randle Field in Wahpeton over the weekend of June 30th...The familiar Elks squad got past the Brewers in a close game in the 2nd round of the tournament to advance to the championship where they easily beat the Clear Lake Lakers.

The weather was nearly perfect for a great weekend of baseball, featuring an 8 team format which included Morris, Clear Lake, Fergus Falls, Nimrod, Moorhead Brewers, Jamestown Elks, Fargo Mudhens, and Midway.  Overall the tournament was a great success.

The Brewers beat the Fargo Mudhens in the opening round, but then lost 2 close contests to the Jamestown Elks and Fergus Fall Hurricanes to go 1-2 for the tournament.

Brewers Remain Perfect in League Play

The Moorhead Brewers ran their perfect league record to 5-0 with wins over the Miners and the Saints on Sunday evening at Helling Field.  In the opener against the Miners the Brewers were down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 6th, but came through with 2 runs to tie and 1 run in the bottom of the 7th to win 3-2.  In the nightcap, they put down the Saints 5-1 to extend their winning streak to 9 games in a row.
