Matt Achter

It took 24 innings of baseball to get the job done and two wild games which featured dramatic moments including a walk-off walk and leaping catch to rob a home run. When it was all said and done, the Moorhead Brewers came away (exhausted) with a top seed in the upcoming exclusive 8-team state tournament starting Saturday August 24th.

Running a tournament AND playing can be taxing. The Brewers put in quite an effort to revive Jack Williams in preparation for the weekend after the Legion Central Plains Regional the week before. On Friday night, the game with Isanti went late into the night. In the bottom of the 15th inning, Blake Turbak drew a bases-loaded, full count walk to end the game. The Brewers beat Shakopee 4-2 thanks to some great defensive plays, including what is widely accepted as the "Play of the Year" when Matt Achter leaped the left field wall to rob Shakopee's Hoover of a 3-run home run. Spencer Flaten also made a diving catch in centerfield to end Shakopee's threat in the bottom of the 9th. Phew. What a weekend!

The Brewers will face rival Cold Spring Springers on Saturday Aug 24th in Howard Lake at 1:30pm, who they have already faced three times this season. The first two games of the season, and then a championship matchup in the Coors Light Classic in Jordan in July. The Springers swept the early matchups but the Brewers came out on top in the last meeting to capture the tournament trophy.

Cold Spring has a long history of fielding one of the top teams in the state. They were runner up to Victoria in last year's state tournament and boast arguably the best pitching staff in class B with Zach Femrite and Ryan Morse. However, the Brewers have beat both pitchers in recent years. The Brewers are 4-2 lifetime versus the Springers.

The Brewers take an impressive 34-4 record to state. For up-to-date stats and the ability to follow live play-by-play action of the Brewers from Howard Lake click here. Note: you must create a free account in order to see all stats.
